Italy is a strategic hub for the health and wellness industry, thanks to a unique combination of tradition, innovation, quality, and a focus on exports. The industry traces its roots to the pharmaceutical tradition of the Renaissance and underwent a major transformation beginning in the 1980s, with the emergence of manufacturing districts, startups, and leading companies.

A healthy sector that innovates, grows, and targets new markets
At the end of 2025, there were 607 companies in the entire pharmaceutical production chain, identified by ATECO code 21, with a total of 75,969 employees, an increase of 9.5% over the last five years.
It is a relatively unevenly distributed sector, with 40% of the companies concentrated in Lombardy, followed by Lazio (12.9%), Tuscany, and Emilia-Romagna (both at 6.9%).

Italy's pharmaceutical industry is highly export-oriented, with approximately 95% of its revenue generated from exports. In 2025, it reaffirmed its position as one of the leading drivers of Made in Italy on the global stage, recording exports of €69.2 billion, up 28.5% from 2024, compared with average growth of 3.2% for Italy's manufacturing sector over the same period.
