Craft tradition, industrial innovation and a global outlook: the Polesine fairground rides district embodies an Italian excellence capable of exporting technology and entertainment all over the world

In the heart of the Polesine area, across the provinces of southern Veneto, lies one of the most distinctive industrial districts of Made in Italy: the one dedicated to the design and manufacture of fairground rides and attractions for amusement parks and travelling entertainment. It is a highly specialised sector which, despite operating far from the major industrial hubs, has built up an international reputation over time thanks to its combination of technical expertise, artisanal tradition and innovation.

A district born from the experience of travelling entertainment

The district’s origins lie in the tradition of families linked to the world of funfairs and travelling shows, who began producing their own attractions directly in the post-war period.

Over time, this experience developed into a structured production supply chain, concentrated mainly in the Bergantino area and neighbouring municipalities, where companies specialising in the design, construction and maintenance of fairground rides now operate.

The growth of the sector has encouraged the development of specialised skills, from metalworking to mechanical and electronic design, creating an industrial ecosystem capable of covering the entire production cycle.

The district in numbers: when a local supply chain becomes a global industry

Polesine is not merely a manufacturing tradition, but a fully-fledged industrial supply chain with a strong economic and international impact. Veneto is now Italy’s leading hub for the production of fairground rides, accounting for around 40% of the country’s companies in the sector and 63% of total employment. The sector as a whole employs around 3,000 people, of whom about 1,500 work within the Polesine district itself, confirming the strategic role of this area in the design and construction of amusement attractions.

Its global outlook is one of the district’s defining features: up to 90% of production is destined for foreign markets, from theme parks to travelling installations, showing how a network of local firms has succeeded in transforming artisanal expertise into an industrial model that is competitive on an international scale.

Overall, the Italian fairground rides sector generates a turnover of around €250 million, of which approximately €150 million is concentrated in the Polesine district, demonstrating the economic weight and level of specialisation achieved by this Made in Italy excellence.

Tradition, innovation and local identity

The Polesine fairground rides district is an emblematic example of Italian territorial specialisation, where skills handed down over time are integrated with research and development. Collaboration between companies has made it possible to transform local know-how into an industrial supply chain recognised internationally, capable of adapting to technological developments and the demands of a constantly evolving market.

Today, the challenge concerns generational renewal and the attraction of new technical skills, both essential to continuing innovation in a sector increasingly focused on digitalisation, energy efficiency and advanced safety.
