Italian robotics represents an area of excellence for the country—and for the world at large. The sector, second in Europe and fifth globally, is recognised as a benchmark for quality and reliability. This industry’s success has been driven by local districts operating within mechanical engineering: one of Italy’s most important sectors, combining tradition with research outcomes to create cutting-edge products.

Italian robotics evolves

The latest invention that has enabled Made in Italy robotics to break new ground is a humanoid that takes artificial intelligence beyond conventional boundaries. Unveiled to the public at the beginning of 2026, this collaborative robot can work alongside people in environments designed and built for humans.

There are several disruptive elements compared to traditional robotics. First, the “body as compute” architecture enables mechatronics and artificial intelligence to operate as a single, integrated system, supporting real-time data processing. This allows the robot to avoid the latency of separate systems and adapt its behaviour more quickly. .

Its outer design also features a tactile skin rather than rigid materials. Sensors beneath the surface can detect pressure or accidental contact—an insight that allows the humanoid to move freely alongside people. Initially, this invention could see wide adoption in manufacturing and logistics, autonomously moving packages and assembling components.

A fast-moving sector: leadership and investment consolidate

This humanoid marks a strategic innovation for Italian robotics which, in 2024, once again ranked among the best in the world. Despite a slight decline in installations compared to 2023, the sector maintained fifth place globally and second in Europe.

The number of new Made in Italy units installed in 2024 was 8,783. The metalworking and machinery sector is the strongest by number of robots, with a 6% increase compared to 2023. Automotive remains strategically important, with a 4% rise in 2024 versus the previous year. Installations in electronics increased by 10% over the same period, while agri-food grew by 5%.
